Australian Short Stories for Boys (& Girls)

Australian Short Stories for Boys (& Girls)

Michael Mardel

Children's / Romance / Gay and Lesbian

Ten short stories of boys in different eras - sailing under Lord Nelson as a powder boy, travelling the east coast of Australia with a dog, father and son interactions, disability, rabbiting in the Depression, refugees - from Afghanistan to Australia,Ireland in St Kevin's time, selling pots and pans to gold diggers in the 1850s, being a tennnis ball boy in 2020 in Monte Carlo.I arrived in this Universe a while back.Initially, you understand, just to sightsee. You know, glide around a little, take in the milky ways and the dusty swirls, all these stars large and small, all these planets green and brown and blue, some with purple plains and sandy deserts, some with gray black mountains draped in trees some and capped in white others, some neither. Many frantic oceans, too, and many placid seas. All very varied and quite pleasing, I must say. Sightseeing.Drifting in for a closer look at some of these planets, I saw roads and wagons and gates and guards and many people, he called them.Drifting in closer still, I saw steady hands under furrowed brows brighten white canvas with color and warmth to capture trees and mountains, painting he called it.I heard symmetry of sound from throats and hands on strings, music he called it.And I saw many feet move in delicate delicious rhythm, dance he called it, and they seemed to enjoy it, these what he called people. And drifting closer still, I heard laments by lovers wronged, I saw seductions soft, and stark betrayals, brutal slayings and happy resurrections.I saw brother helping brother, sister leaving sister, son trusting father, daughter hating mother, or at least that is how he explained these odd happenings to me, my escort. Though, to be honest, I could not see the truth of these events for they had no pattern to them, not like those of their music or dance, he called them.So I turned to him and I asked, “What’s the point, then? Without a pattern?”“It’s hard to explain,” he answered. “And almost impossible to understand without one of those,” indicating a long display of sparkling shapes that looked just like what he called people but that didn’t move. He brought me down and closer.“What are they?” I asked.“They are called bodies,” he said. “You should try one.”We slowly drifted down the line of these shapely shapes all in glistening skin (still drying and cooling, he told me), until we came to the very end of the display where hung a firm and strong male, he called it, cooled and comely in his long white robe. “Touch it,” he suggested.I looked at him. A question. I once heard of these things. I heard there can be danger.“Trust me,” he said. So, perhaps unwisely, I trusted him, and I brushed against the bare, strong arm.On contact there was a shock a jolt a rush and then a screaming wind furiously inhaling and then a brief blackness and then I found myself inside this what he called a male and many things happened all at the same time, too fast, too many, too soon:Every one thing I saw, every blade of grass, every bird, every tree, every pebble—until then simply small pattern-less somethings to me—was absorbed by this body and once inside it each of these almost countless things spawned a response—a sea of responses. Each and every thing. I felt like a weather system. Storm everywhere.

After the last woman on Earth dies and the moon breaks in half, the male survivors begin to question love, masculinity, and fate. Later, a civilization on the moon begins to rebuild after decades of civil war. Three other stories chart the progress of a boy and his father on their multi-year journey from rural, 1960s Alabama to a war-torn Vietnam and ultimately to the moon.Life on Other Moons is the debut fiction collection from Roger Market. It was first published in simultaneous limited editions in May 2013 (paperback and handmade). After the last woman on Earth dies and the moon breaks in half, the male survivors begin to question love, masculinity, and fate. The story centers on the question "What does it mean to be a man in a world without women?" In the title story, "Life on Other Moons," a civilization on the moon begins to rebuild after decades of civil war. Three other stories chart the progress of a boy and his father on their multi-year journey from rural, 1960s Alabama to a war-torn Vietnam and ultimately to the moon. But the moon does not dominate every story. In "Don't Mind the Bunny," a little girl's disability becomes apparent through the objective viewpoint of a stuffed bunny. "Love the Shoes" chronicles the first meeting of a father, after a long stretch in prison, with his teenage son. In "The Paper Man," a society of primitive but powerful women encounters the first man to enter its gates in decades. While the book's eleven stories are linked in unexpected ways, they do not necessarily take place in the same version of reality. The characters in Life on Other Moons are united in their common search for a home, a functional family, a sense of self. Will they find peace? The author invites you to interact with him on social media using the hashtag #LifeMoons, as well as through e-mail. Publicity!: Death Becomes Her (Vol 2)

Edwin Betancourt

Gay and Lesbian / Fantasy / Fiction

Fearless Crisis Manager Laurel Quinn returns as a mysterious and dangerous force known as ‘TSK511’ has risen, wreaking havoc on unsuspecting celebs and murdering anyone who gets in their way. This book contains 8 brand new short stories filled with scandals ripped from the tabloids and page turning cliffhangers; all leading up to an ending that will change Laurel’s life tragically forever! This is the second volume in the 'Publicity!' series which follows ruthless, quick witted and independent Crisis Manager Laurel Quinn. The book is filled with eight short stories. The story begins a week after the first volume where Laurel's assistant Tony Vincetti discovered that her father is New York City's deadliest Kingpin Vincent Capella. Tony feels betrayed that she never told him this truth as he was always honest with her and his lecture is cut short when an actor enters showing Laurel a letter he received from someone named 'TSK511' and they're blackmailing him threatening to reveal a secret he thought he hid away. After Laurel is told about the actor's "scary" secret she didn't believe this mysterious person was capable of inflicting any real damage-that is until Darlene Hart-from the first volume- is brutally murdered by someone who leaves a note simply saying 'One Life Holds Bloody Hands When Death Becomes Her. TSK511'.Throughout the book Laurel is fixing scandals that seem to be lead back to this mysterious person and every time she gets closer another person is killed and if things couldn't get any more worst; a ghost from Laurel's past resurfaces threatening her freedom. This book contains seven short stories with scandals ripped straight from the tabloids, absurd characters, the return of old faces, shocking twists and turns, page turning cliffhangers and an ending so surprising that readers will probably hate me for it. [Trigger Warnings: There are four murders (stabbing & shooting) in the story and scenes of two men in love, kissing and cuddling. If you are against Homosexuality or any one who identifies as LGBTQIA then I advise you not to read this book as I am a Gay Man myself and you'll be insulted with every word you read. Thankies! :) ]
